The pelargonium graveolens species of geranium is the main choice for aromatherapy. Many other species of geranium exist, however they do not possess the same theraputic properties and are chosen for reasons of economy rather than quality or effectiveness.
The essential oil is extrcated through the process of steam distillation using the leaves and stalks. It is a clear to pale yellow or greenish colour in appearance and has an aroma of sweet roses.
Geranium oil is cited as being highly beneficial for irritated and mature skin. Along with the various rose oils, geranium is arguably one of the best all round oils for women. It has a beautiful floral aroma and is great for relaxation particularly if you feel tense or stressed during menstruation or menopause.
