The essential oil is extracted through the process of cold pressing using the fresh peel. The oil can be pale yellow or a ruby colour in appearance and has an invigorating, sharp and refreshing aroma. It is commonly used for oily skin and hair as well as for maintaining a healthy circulation and muscles.
In aromatherapy and vaporiser treatments it is considered beneficial in treating hangovers, headaches, tiredness, fatigue and exhaustion. In massage or diluted in a bath, it is thought to be helpful for treatment of cellulite, fatigue, headaches, colds and flu. It has an uplifting effect on the mind and can give a sense of feeling refreshed.
In skincare preparations it is thought it can help acne, clearing of a greasy or oily complexion and can help rid the body of excess water associated with water retention.
